Schedule of Events/Course Descriptions

Friday, May 4

8:30 am – 5:00 pm Registration Open

8:45 am – 12:00 pm Optional Workshop: Title Insurance and Interests in Ohio, Gas, Coal and Other Mineral Rights (Registration required) - Samuel Shellhaas, First American Title Insurance Co.

Ohio has become a hotbed for oil, gas and mineral leases in recent months. This workshop will cover topics related to these leases including ownership of mineral interest in Ohio, title examination for minerals, oil and gas leases and reservations of minerals. The final hour of the workshop will include interactive group exercises and discussions of situation examples.

This presentation will examine mortgage fraud’s role in the economic crisis, the persistence and continuing evolution of fraud schemes, fraud risks and geographies today.

1:50 pm - 2:50 pm Distressed Sale Underwriter Panel - Kevin Eichner, First American Title Insurance Co.; Deborah McDonald, Fidelity National Title Group; Frank Long, Stewart Title Guaranty Co. and Frank Rose, Old Republic National Title Insurance Co.

A panel of four underwriters will address the procedures for four distressed sale scenarios: foreclosure sales, receivership sales, short sales and bankruptcy sales and the common underwriting issues which arise during these types of sales.

3:00 pm - 3:50 pm An Update from the Ohio Department of Insurance -  David Barney, Darcy Moulin and Michelle Rafeld

A panel of three Ohio Department of Insurance officials will provide an update on issues impacting the title industry. Listen to these officials discuss issues concerning licensing laws, 2011annual review filings and the Department’s enforcement efforts.

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Case Law and Legislative Update - Russell J. Kutell, Frost Brown Todd LLC

OLTA Education Committee Chair Russell J. Kutell present the 2011-2012 case law and legislative update during which recent court decisions and current legislative issues impacting the real estate and title industries will be discussed.

8:15 am- 9:00 am Class Actions: What Are They and Their Impact on the Title Industry- Robert Wasserman, Old Republic National Title Insurance Co.

This presentation will discuss class action litigation and the types of cases particular to the title insurance industry being filed. Also discussed is how much litigation impacts the day-to-day operation of the title insurance industry.

9:00 - 9:45 am Bankruptcy and Receiverships - Kathleen Nitschke, Giffen and Kaminski

The discussion starts with a primer in bankruptcy for title professionals and will cover the favorite attacks of bankruptcy trustees including notary acknowledgement clauses and legal descriptions. Nitschke will also discuss the role and duty of the receiver as well as title issues in receivership.

10:00 - 11:00 am Probate and Estate Issues Affecting Title and Decedent’s Sales Cases - G. Robert Hines

Issues concerning estates and probate proceedings can have a large impact on real estate transactions. Listen to a highly regarded real estate practitioner discus issues relating to the title to a decedent’s real estate interests, claims against an estate, the effect of liens against a devisee or heir, land sale actions concerning a decedent’s estate and problems arising out of wills which can impact the sale of real property.

11:00 am - Noon Economic Forecast - Kevin Gillen, Econsult

An economist with a background in urban economics and real estate finance will provide an outlook for the housing industry nationally and in Ohio. In providing this outlook, the economist will speak about current macroeconomic indicators, their implications for the national housing market and the current economic and housing indicators for Ohio and their implications for the Ohio housing market.

Continuing Education

  • We have applied for 3.0 title CIE credit hours and 3.0 CLE credit hours for the optional oil and gas workshop.

  • We have applied for 7.5 General CLE from the Ohio Supreme Court
  • We have applied for 6.5 CLE credit hours from the Kentucky Bar Association
  • This seminar has been submitted to the Ohio Department of Insurance for 7.5 title CIE including 2.0 Ethics CIE credit hours. The course level is intermediate.
  • The experience and qualifications of the instructors is available upon request.
  • To receive continuing insurance education (CIE) credit, you must dot he following for each sessions (an exam is not required to receive credit)
    1. Sign the attendance roster before the session.
    2. Attend the session in its entirety
    3. Complete & sign the request for CIE credits
    4. Turn in the request for CIE credits at the end of the session

Partial CIE credit can be given to attendees of this seminar. The credit must be rounded down to half hour increments

OLTA will only accept National Producer Numbers (NPN) for Continuing Insurance Education credit. We cannot accept social security numbers or license numbers. To find your NPN, visit and select Ohio from the state drop down menu. You may also find your NPN number through under Quick Links/Agent/Agency Locator on the left side of the page.

Requirements for Continuing Legal Education credit have not changed. You are still required to provide your Attorney Registration Number to receive credit.
